When this happens often, the result will be spasms, reduced biochemical performance, and muscular pain.

In the words of Carolyn Dean of the Medical Advisory Board of the Nutritional Magnesium Association, she said excess calcium and lack of magnesium in a cell can lead to sustained muscle contraction. This could lead to spasms, convulsions, and twitches; she also added that these factors could reduce the quality of life.

Our muscles require sufficient levels of magnesium to function at optimal levels. Magnesium is a source of energy and oxygen. It also plays a major role in the management of muscle spasms, muscle soreness, muscle cramps and muscle fatigue.

 

How do I know my body lacks magnesium?

Consistent occurrence of muscle aches and pains is a sign of lower magnesium level in the body.

The National Institute of Health observed that lower intake of magnesium or abnormal losses of magnesium as a result of indulgence in alcoholism could lead to lack of magnesium in the body.

These are the signs that could point out that you do not have enough magnesium in your body;

  • Nausea
  • Fatigue
  • loss of appetite
  • vomiting amongst others.

As magnesium levels deteriorate, you will continue to experience seizures, cramps, numbness, muscle contractions, personality changes and tingling.

You must have noticed that athletes and individuals who participate in sporting activities often consume magnesium supplements to avert injury. Magnesium also helps to boost their recovery from injury.

 

Magnesium and mineral supplements

It is unfortunate that your body’s magnesium requirements cannot be supplied by a single source of food. There is a need for you to combine at least ten foods to have sufficient magnesium levels.

These foods include:

  • Yoghurt
  • Beans, nuts and seeds
  • Chard and other green leafy vegetables
  • Avocado
  • Figs
  • Dark chocolate
  • Banana

You can purchase magnesium supplements in various health food stores and pharmacies around you. The recommended daily intake of magnesium for adults is approximately 350mg/day for men and women.
