“Create your own visual style…let it be unique for yourself and yet identifiable for others.” –Orson Welles

Style is integral to one’s persona—there are subtle hints in it that show who you truly are.

To quote world-renowned stylist and fashion designer Rachel Zoe, “Style is a way to say who you are without having to speak”. In a sense, it is a manner of introducing yourself to onlookers without uttering a single word. With these in consideration, we, as individuals—whether fashionable or not—should endeavor to choose and say the right words with our selection and assemblage of clothes. Unfortunately, people seem to equate good style with extravagance and as a consequence, they think it would take quite a lot of money just to look great and very pull together. However, this is a misnomer as improving your style and the way you look in clothes does not even require you to shop. Indeed, it matters not whether your clothing of choice is mainly hip hop clothing or casual wear, so long as you wear it with style, any outfit can look elegant. But this begs the question: How do you wear your clothes with style? Moreover, what are the ways to improve style?

Well, if you have been asking the same thing yourself, read on below to find out.

  1. Work on your posture

There is a good reason why clothes look so great on mannequins. This is because mannequins are generally designed with good posture in order to showcase the clothes they wear best. After all, they have to market it to buyers, so it should showcase the clothes in such a way that would entice consumers to buy. In the same regard, you should do the same as well. Improving your posture is vital to having great style. Standing and sitting with your head up, shoulders back and head up would contribute to improving your overall appearance. Plus, they make clothes look so much better on you as well.

  1. Clean out your closet

It might sound counterintuitive. After all, we were always trained to believe that more clothes means more variety and better options. Unfortunately, this is not necessarily the case. Sure, you are presented with a myriad of clothing options, but only a few of them are of any real quality. If you wish to wear only the best ensembles, you have to get rid of a few items that are holding you back as well. This means throwing out or donating clothing items that no longer do anything to elevate your style. Get rid of last season items, clothes beyond repair and items that have not seen the light of day in months (or even years). Do not worry about all those clothes you will be throwing away—after all, in doing so you would effectively be making room for more.

  1. Have an attitude adjustment

In choosing clothes and having great style, it is imperative that you accept that fact that you deserve to look good and feel great about that as well. Wrap your head around that and come into terms with the fact that regardless of what you think about fashion, appearance does matter and with that, making a good impression matters as well. In this regard, you should view style not as something only fashion-forward individuals care about. Moreover, you should not think it shallow to be a little meticulous about how you present yourself. To reconcile your feelings about it (especially if you are rather ambivalent), try to view it in the same manner as something important to you. In this way, it would be easier to be all psyched about something you have complete control over. Remember, making a conscious endeavor—no matter how big or small, will eventually beget a big payoff.
